Spreads Ephemera-led
Travel Receipt Confetti Spread
Forty small receipts cut into confetti-sized pieces and scattered, then selectively glued — 14 fixed, 26 left loose under a stitched acetate window.
14 layers 6 min
Cut first, arrange second
Receipts are all the same shape, which is why a spread of whole receipts looks like a drawer. Cut every one of them to a different size — 18 mm to 34 mm on the long edge — then arrange. Cutting after arranging never works because the arrangement you liked was based on shapes that no longer exist.
The 14/26 split
Glue only a third of the pieces. The fixed ones give the eye a structure to land on; the loose ones move when the book is handled, which is the whole reason to leave them loose. Decide which third by shape, not by colour: glue down the pieces with the straightest edges, because straight edges read as deliberate, and leave the irregular ones to shift.
Acetate window, stitched not glued
Glue will cloud 0.2 mm acetate and leave visible ridges by month three. Stitch it instead: punch holes 6 mm apart around the perimeter with a 1.0 mm needle, then backstitch with waxed linen at 5 mm stitch length. The window then holds the loose confetti in place, can be lifted to rearrange, and the stitching itself becomes part of the design.
Static is the enemy
Acetate builds a static charge and will suck every loose confetti piece toward it while you are positioning the window. Wipe both faces with a dryer sheet before you start, and work on a wooden or paper surface rather than a plastic mat. On plastic the pieces jump up to 20 mm; on wood they stay where you put them.
Assembly order
- 1Cut every receipt to a different length between 18 mm and 34 mm.
- 2Scatter all 40 pieces, then move them with tweezers until the density reads evenly.
- 3Glue the 14 straightest-edged pieces in place with a glue stick.
- 4Punch perimeter holes 6 mm apart for the acetate window.
- 5Backstitch the window at 5 mm stitch length with waxed linen.
About 6 minutes of bench time, plus whatever the adhesive needs.

Where this goes wrong
Thermal receipts fade to blank in two to five years and will take the page with them visually — a spread of grey rectangles. Photocopy any receipt whose information matters onto 80 gsm bond, and use the copy instead. Keep one original under the window if the object matters more than the data.
